Historic Preservation Planner

Activities associated with the position include promoting historic preservation and providing technical assistance to a variety of individuals and organizations wishing to preserve historic structures and/or sites, assisting with obtaining grants and other sources of funding for historic preservation, and providing general assistance to individuals and/or organizations interested in historic preservation.
Job responsibilities require strong organizational and interpersonal skills, experience working with public and non-profit organizations, and significant knowledge of historic preservation activities.
Work is evaluated by the Executive Director through review of the level of assistance provided to local and regional entities on issues related to historic preservation, ability to interact effectively with local public officials and non-profit organizations, and the level of funding obtained for historic preservation.
Illustrative Examples of Work Prepares and/or assists with preparing grant applications for historic preservation.
Completes Section 106 reviews to ensure compliance with federal laws related to historic preservation and determine the proposed projects' effect on cultural and/or historic resources.
Provides technical assistance to individuals and organizations interested in historic preservation on issues pertaining to rehabilitation, grant opportunities, design review guidelines, historic zoning, and tax credits.
Completes eligibility reviews for the National Register of Historic Places.
Provides technical assistance to local and regional entities on housing related issues and assists with obtaining funding through THDA and the HOME program.
Prepares nominations and submits to the National Register of Historic Places.
Promotes historic preservation initiatives through public speaking engagements.
Assisting with historic preservation week activities, promoting historic properties in newspapers and other periodicals, etc.
Attends historic preservation related conferences and workshops and provides information to County Executives, City Managers, non-profit organizations, etc.
Participates on task forces and committees on issues related to historic preservation.
Assists with the administration of grants related to historic preservation.
Maintains frequent contact with state employees, local government officials, members of non-profit organizations to receive and provide information pertaining to historic preservation.
Makes decisions regarding the preparation and administration of grants on issues pertaining to eligibility, funding sources, eligible activities, etc.
Performs related duties as required.
Necessary Requirements of Work Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with an undergraduate degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture, archaeology, or closely related field (Graduate degree preferred); a minimum of two years of full-time experience in research, writing, teaching, interpretation, or other demonstrable professional activity with an academic institution, historical organization, agency, museum, or other professional institution; experience preparing and submitting grant applications; strong organizational and interpersonal skills; or any equivalent combination of education or experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Thorough knowledge of historic preservation activities including Section 106, the National Register of Historic Places, and use of tax credits for historic preservation.
Thorough knowledge of the Tennessee Historical Commission including organizational structure, operational regulations and guidelines, and eligibility criteria for funding opportunities.
Considerable knowledge of grant preparation and submission techniques and practices.
Considerable knowledge of local and regional public and non-profit entities involved with historic preservation.
Ability to interact successfully and maintain productive relationships with local, regional, and state public officials and individuals working for non-profit organizations.
Ability to make sound and appropriate decisions regarding grant funding opportunities, eligibility for historic designation, Section 106 reviews, etc.
Ability to manage personal time to meet workload demands and established deadlines.
Ability to compile detailed information and documentation in an organized and accessible manner.
Ability to conduct meetings and perform public speaking engagements in an effective manner.
Ability to acquire and utilize new and/or changing work related information pertaining to historic preservation and affordable housing.
Ability to effectively administer grant funded projects.
Special Necessary Requirement Possession of a valid Tennessee Driver's License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.

The Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) has very specific educational and experiential requirements for grant funding as indicated in the initial portion of Necessary Requirements of Work.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
